Late 19th Century Turkish Oushak Smyrna Carpet
Three columns of characteristic Oushak palmettes alternate with two vertical lines of cruciform, hooked motives, all on an otherwise un-ornamented tomato red ground. A red rosette and Ottoman hyacinth border makes a traditional frame. Light green is widely used as an accent tone. This circa 1880 carpet is still in the traditional style with much earlier roots, before the neo-Persian trends of the late 19th century captured the market.
