19th Century N. Indian Amritsar Carpet
The perfectly balanced herati pattern of rosettes and curved leaves neatly fills the straw yellow field of this antique c.1890 Indian carpet, all enframed by an unusual version of the classic turtle palmette as the main border motif. The minors are in simple patterns.
The carpets woven in the northern Indian city of Amritsar are of slightly lower weave quality than Agras, but this pale straw piece has its own charms with a medium scale all-over Herati design with dark brown accents and extending to the medium brown border with its chunky palmettes including imaginative turtles. Antique carpet, good condition.
