19th Century N. Indian Agra Carpet
The pattern of this c.1880 antique rug from northern India is directly derived from the classical Indian Mughal Lahore carpets. The pattern, on the deepest coloured ground imaginable, focuses on a giant, elaborate palmette, around which circle lancet leaves, scrolling vines and an array of lesser palmettes. The ivory border continues the palmette idea, but in a more restrained, but still lively, manner.
