Early 20th Century Turkish Oushak Carpet
This is a very special Ushak carpet. The strong red field has a wandering lozenge lattice punctuated with various eccentric palmettes, leaving plenty of open space. The quarter corner pieces descend from classical period Ushaks. The informality continues in the border with attempted split arabesques and funky palmettes. The unusual size and design points to a special client for this one-of-a-kind circa 1900 west Turkish gallery carpet.
